Population and Housing Census [hh/popcen]
The 2010 Zambian census was the fifth national population census conducted since Zambia's independence in 1964. It was carried out from October 16 to November 15, 2010, with complete enumeration achieved by November 30, 2010. The census collected data on population size, demographic characteristics, socioeconomic factors, and housing conditions.
A Census of Population and Housing is defined by the United Nations as the total process of collecting, compiling, evaluating, analysing and publishing demographic, economic and social data pertaining, at a specified time or times, to all persons in a designated area or the whole country. It is the primary source of information about the Population of a country.The 2010 census covered the entire country divided into 10 provinces, 76 districts and 1,421 wards.

The 2010 Census used a single questionnaire to capture individuals, household and housing characteristics from the population.Persons who were present at the time of the enumerator’s visit
were counted directly as Usual Household Members present at the Housing Unit/Dwelling or as Visitors of the Household. This is what is called De Facto Population. While those who were
absent were enumerated by proxy, that is, as Usual Household Members Absent from the Housing Unit/Dwelling at the time of the enumerator’s visit. The Usual Household Members present at
the Housing Unit/Dwelling at the time of the enumerator’s visit together with the Usual Household Members Absent from the Housing Unit/Dwelling is what is called the De Jure Population or True Population. 2010 census used both De jure and De facto.

The national team monitored overall progress , Provincial teams, District census officers, Field supervisors oversaw Enumerators.
The 2010 Census used a single questionnaire to capture individuals, household and housing characteristics from the population, Door to Door interviews by trained enumerators were conducted using the Paper questionnaire, data was collected on individuals and households. Field team composition for 2010 census comprised of 4 Enumerators - 1 Field Supervisor- 1 Assistant master trainer , 1 Master trainer and 1 driver.
Field editing: supervisors checked questionnaires for completeness and consistency
Office editing : Data entry cleks and editors reviewed, cleaned and coded data
Computer based checks using software such as Cspro and SPSS to detect errors , inconsistences
Note that in 2010 Data capture and processing of the questionnaires used Optical Mark Reading (OMR) and Intelligent Character Recognition (ICR) technology. By using OMR and ICR technologies, the data capture process becomes more efficient and faster compared to manual data entry methods.

The Agency shall,where statistics are designated as official statistics, protect the confidentiality and identity of the source of data. Under the provision of the Statistics ACT no.13 of 2018, ZamStats is obliged to preserve the confidentiality of respondent information in all its census and survey data Before being granted access to the dataset, all users have to formally agree: 1. To make no copies of any files or portions of files to which s/he is granted access except those authorized by the Agency. 2. Not to use any technique in an attempt to learn the identity of any person, establishment, or sampling unit not identified on public use data files. 3. To hold in strictest confidence the identification of any establishment or individual that may be inadvertently revealed in any documents or discussion, or analysis. Such inadvertent identification revealed in her/his analysis will be immediately brought to the attention of the Agency |
Micro data records are anonymised as per procedures before these are made available to users.
Census micro data will only be provided as a micro sample (10 percent) and subjected to the anonymisation techniques and documented accordingly.
