IAS covered various agriculture subsectors of the country including crops, livestock, poultry and forestry in the framework of the 50x2030 Initiative. The 50x2030 Initiative is an initiative to Close the Agricultural Data Gap which is a multi-agency partnership (World Bank, FAO and IFAD) for data smart agriculture to strengthen national agricultural data systems in 50 countries by year 2030. In general, the estimates obtained related to crops, livestock, poultry and apiculture. Unless otherwise stated, the reference period for the information collected was the agricultural season starting 1st October 2023 and ending 30th September 2024 (2023\/2024 season).\n\n\nObjectives of the 2024 IAS\n\n1. Improved Coverage and scope: targeted all Agricultural production units.\n\n2. Improve Comparability and Coherence: used international conncepts and definitions.\n\n3. Provide market insights: to farmers, businesses and investors in making informed decisions regarding crop production.\n\n4. Equip policymakers with reliable statistics: for strategic planning, resource allocation and intervention programs in the agricultural sector.\n\n\nThe IAS targeted agriculture households: Small and Medium Scale, Large-Scale Farms or Establishments. The Large-Scale Farms or Establishments were surveyed exhaustively nationawide.\n\nThe survey was carried out in all the 10 provinces of the country in order to provide estimates at Provincial and National level and will represent two sub-populations of farms. A sample of small and medium-scale agricultural households will be visited by enumerators and interviewed with face-to-face interview. The large-scale farms will be surveyed exhaustively in all the 10 provinces of Zambia","coll_dates":[{"start":"2025-02-03","end":"2025-02-28"}],"nation":[{"name":"Zambia","abbreviation":"ZMB"}],"geog_coverage":"National, Province, Rural, Urban","analysis_unit":"Agricultural Household \nAgricultural farms\/Establishments","universe":"The survey covered all agriculture households and all large scale agriculture establishments","data_kind":"Sample survey data [ssd]","notes":"The scope of the IAS included:\n\nSMALL AND MEDIUM SCALE HOUSEHOLD: Holding Identification, Household Demographic Characteristics, Record Keeping, Parcel Roster, Field Roster, Crop Roster,Temporary Crop Production (Non Vegetable), Permanent Crop Production (Plantations), Vegetable Crop Production, Temporary Stocks and Sales, Permanent Stocks and Sales, Input Use, Livestock in Stock, Change in Stock, Change in Stock - Poultry, Egg Production, Milk Production, Bee Keeping, Biogas, Livestock By- Products, Forestry Production, Labour.\n\nLARGE-SCALE FARM ESTABLISHMENT: Farm Identification, Owner and Manager Characteristics, Land Use, Crop Production, Vegetable and Flower Production, Fruit Production and Sales (Permannet Crops), Crop Stocks, Livestock in Stock, Chang in Stock, Milk Production, Egg Production, Labour"},"method":{"data_collection":{"data_collectors":[{"name":"Zambia Statistics Agency","abbreviation":"ZamStats","affiliation":"Ministry of Finance and National Planning"}],"sampling_procedure":"Sample Design: The sampling method for agricultural households is a stratified two stage sampling. The primary sampling unit (PSU) was the enumeration area (EA) as designed for the 2022 census of population and housing (CPH) and the secondary sampling unit (SSU) was the Agricultural households in the sampled EAs. The complete list of agricultural households was developed from a listing operation. The sampling frame was stratified by district and rural\/urban criteria in each Province (estimation domain\/analytical stratum). An implicit stratification was also performed through sorting the frame of EAs by geographic identification particulars and the number of agricultural households before the selection of EAs.\n\nSample size and allocation: Sample sizes were calculated for each province considering requirements of reliable estimates of crop area and livestock number. The sample size of households was computed separately for crop and livestock and the final size was chosen considering the contribution of the provinces to crop area and livestock. A total of 1,450 EAs were selected countrywide, culminating to 20,300 households to be interviewed. All the 2,400 Large-Scale establishments or farms were interviewed in totality - 100 percent coverage.\n\nSelection of the sample of EAs: The stratified sample of EAs was selected using Systematic Sampling Probability Proportional to Size (PPS) with the number of agricultural households at EA level as measure of size.\n\nSelection of the sample of agricultural households\nA listing of agricultural households was conducted in each of the sampled EAs. The listing module was used to prepare a complete list of agricultural households from which a sample of 14 households was selected for further interviewing. Non-agricultural households and households categorised as \"large scale\" were excluded. Systematic random sampling was used to draw the 14 households. In this survey, there was to be no household replacements.","coll_mode":["Face-to-face [f2f]"],"research_instrument":"IAS 2024 had two types of questionnaires;\n\n1. Household questionnaire - was used to capture household members and household characteristics and all the data related to crops, livestock, poultry and apiculture.\n2. Establishment questionnaire - covered activities of large scale agricultural households as well as establishments and institutions. \n\nIn addition to the above mentioned tools, there was also a listing form used during the Listing Stage.\n\nAll the questionnaires were developed and published in English. There were no translated questionnaires produced.\nAll the questionnaires are provided as external resources.","coll_situation":"The training of data collectors was done for a period of 10 days after which the field staff were deployed for the actual data collection. The questionnaires were pre-tested before, during and after trarining. On average an interview took about an hour and half for household interviews and about 50 minutes for establishment interviews. \n\nEach province had a Coordinator and a Master Trainer who were the overseers of the survey process. Each field team comprised of a supervisor and 4 to 5 enumerators and a driver. The questions in the questionnaire were primarily in English but some or most of the interviews were conducted in the local language predominant in the area where the interviews were carried out. The data collectors that were engaged to collect data had to be fluent in both English and the local languages for them to be able to translate the questions from English to the local language without changing the meaning or intention of the questions.\n\nBefore starting any interviews, local authorities in that area were informed of the presense of the field staff. This was cardinal as it curbed any suspicions and reduced non-compliance from the respondents. If there were any issues or challenges encountered by the field staff, the MT and Project Coordinator were on hand to help correct the situation.\n\nInterviews were conducted everyday throughout the survey period. Each Taem was assigned about 15 EAs to cover. The data collection took place over a period of 26 days from 3rd February to 28th Frbruary, 2025.","act_min":"The data collection was conducted in teams. Each interviewing team comprised of a Supervisor or Team Lead with about 5 to 6 interviewers in some instances. Each team was allocated a vehicle with a driver to facilitate travel from one EA to another..\n\nThe supervisor was in charge of the team and took the lead role in coordinating all the data collection activities, management of the team, supplies and equipment, finances, maps and listings as well as coordinating with the local authorites concerning the survey plan, lodging or accomomdation arrangements and travel. He\/she was equally in charge of area identification, area boundary identification, assigning work to the other team members, spot checking, reveiewing of questionnaires and sending the completed data to the server via synchronisation. The team lead was the contact person between the field team and the project team from the ZamStats Head Office.\n\nThe project team from ZamStats head office made periodic checks on the teams in the field throughout the course of the survey until the exercise ended.","cleaning_operations":"1.
